Kara Walker

I am really inspired by Kara Walker's work. Walker highlights issues of gender and identity, she uses a very truthful manner to portray almost nightmareish images. Her work is very animated and she is constantly exceeding the boundaries by reshaping and evaluating the traditional silhouette. Walkers work is very fantastical but her exploration leads to important and serious questions regarding race, sexuality and gender. Walker transforms the traditional sense of printmaking, allowing new media and performance arts to be incorporated into her work. I want to explore this type of art making, using images to tell a story and new media to bring them to life. This exploration will hopefully help me to discover my thoughts ideas and frustrations and lead to a better understanding of my self and identity as an artist.
